LEGION XXIV MEDIA - ATLANTIA
"On Guard" at House DarkYard, Pennsic-28, Aug-99 ** Commander in "Leo" (Lion) Garb
Legion XXIV Media
Atlantia was established in Modern Times on the Kalends of Martius 2751
AUC
( March 1, 1998 AD ) to defend the frontiers of ancient Rome
in the Mid Atlantic Region of North America. It is intended as a
re-enactment unit to display Roman Army Life, Dress, Battle Tactics,
History and Atmosphere at Faires, Schools or other Public Functions.
The dress, weapons and other equipment of the Legion are authentic
and historically correct as reasonably possible and have been assembled
and/or obtained at our member's own expense.
The Legions of Imperial Rome constituted the first tax supported and government supplied professional army in history. The Legionaries or "Miles"(solders) were paid wages, given a pension and upon completion of 20 years of military service, were provided with a piece of land for their retirement. A basic Legion or "Legio" from the late Republic and into the Empire Period contained about 4800 or more legionaries and was composed of 10 Cohorts or "Cohors" of about 500 men, made up from 6 Centurys or "Centuriae", containing 80 solders in 10 ranks of 8 men each; similar in structure to our modern army divisions, battalions, companies and squads. After 50 AD or so, Legions contained as many as 5500 soldiers; when the first cohort of these later legions was expanded to about 800 men, in five expanded centuries and up to 150 auxiliary archers, horsemen, scouts and dispatch riders could be attached to the Legion.
Imperial Rome was the Super Power of the Ancient World ! At its peak, during the 1st Century AD; the Roman Imperial Army, composed of up to 150,000 legionaries; conquered, ruled and guarded an Empire that stretched from Scotland to Syria; governed 50 million people and covered a region which comprises more than 40 nations today. At its height, from about 10 AD to circa 200 AD, the City of Rome had a population of over one million people. Such a population density in another european city would not occur until the City of London, England in the year 1800; which had been founded as "Londinium" by the invading Roman Legions. The Roman "Pony Express" could deliver letters across the Empire in a matter of weeks and was the fastest mail delivery system in the world until the development of the railroad. For historians, senators, students, young or old; movie producers and movie goers alike; as well as for most everyone else, its appeal has never gone out of style.
The Mid to Late First Century AD era of the Roman Empire is the primary
time period represented by Legion XXIV during our re-enactment events.
However, as we are interested in portraying a wider period of ancient military
armor, dress and style in a "Military Through the Ages" format; Sumarians,
Spartans, Macedonians, Greeks, Celts, Barbarians and other ancient military
personnel, along with those just interested in ancient military history are also
most welcome.
A Roman Shield Front Advance is demonstrated
The members of the Twenty Fourth Legion demonstrate the tactics, combat methods and the various weapons used by the Legions of ancient Rome. We have joined other reenactment groups at public displays and "Time Line" historical events. We can discuss many aspects of Roman army life, and will sometimes spend a day or weekend living as our ancient counterparts did on campaign.
Our campaigns are conducted in the Mid-Atlantic Region of PA, NJ, MD, VA, NY and Ontario. We have some members from a distance away who participate when they are in or near our provincia. Consult Events for our upcoming campaigns.
Roman Atmosphere at a Banquet Gladiator Exhibition at a Gala Dinner
Legion XXIV has also supplied costuming for local drama theater and has provided historical atmosphere at various banquets, church pageants, meetings and other public functions using authentic and/or theatrical dress, as required or appropriate.
Legion XXIV has provided historical and instructional demonstrations for ancient history study classes at local schools. Roman Army organization, battle tactics and history are described. The accomplishments of the Roman Legions in building roads, structures and aqueducts are discussed; along with the dress, armor, weapons and equipment used in the daily life of the Roman Legionary being demonstrated. Students are given the opportunity to try on helmets and armor as well as participate in battle tactics and formations. These "hands-on" experiences have helped to bring ancient history alive for many school students.
The Commander's adage is "Recruit Them Young for Rome!" Here, a group of potential recruits poses under the gaze of Commander Marsallas at the conclusion of a School Demonstration. The students always relish the opportunity to try on the helmets and armor, as the highlight of Marsallas' classroom campaigns.
In March 2001, Legion XXIV was in "Pictures" for a professional advertising movie/video session. We were assisted by Members of Legion XX and were confronted by "barbarians" from the Barony of Settmour Swamp. Our Legionaries, along with 25 movie extras, earned their "stripes" performing in 35 degree clear and windy weather, experiencing what the Legions of Rome encountered while defending the Frontiers of the Empire in Britain and Northern Europe.
