SALVETE OMNES - The Midwest Vexillation of Legion XXIV was established in 2001 as a reenactment unit to display Roman and other ancient military dress, battle tactics and history, Roman daily life and culture at faires, schools, museums, and other public functions. We recruit from the Mid-Western States of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Western Ontario. Those from other nearby states are also most welcome to apply.

The dress, weapons, and other equipment of the Vexillation as part of Legion XXIV are as authentic and historically accurate as reasonably possible and have been assembled and/or obtained at our members’ own expense.

The legions of imperial Rome constituted the first professional standing army in history. The MILITES, or legionaries, were paid wages, given a pension and upon completion of their service were often provided with a plot of ground for their retirement. A LEGIO, or legion, consisted of about 5,000 regular soldiers. Legions were organized into COHORTES, or cohorts of about 480 men. The cohorts were assembled from CENTURIONES, or centuries of about 80 men. Each century was further subdivided into CONTURBATIONES, or squads of 8-10 men. Sometimes detachments of soldiers known as VEXILLATIONES were sent for special purpose duties away from their home legions. Such is the mission of our Midwestern vexillation. The word comes from VEXILLUM, or banner carried by a group of soldiers on duty.

The mid to late first century AD era of the Roman Empire is the primary time period represented by Legion XXIV during our reenactment events. However, as we are interested in portraying a wider period of ancient military armor, dress, and style in the ‘military through the ages’ format; Celts, Sumerians, Spartans, Macedonians, Greeks, and other ancient military personnel are encouraged to contact us for events. We also have a gladiatorial combat group available for demonstrations. The members of the Twenty-Fourth Legion, along with allied auxiliary troops and civilians, can present on many aspects of Roman daily life, including demonstration camps, drill, and lectures on Latin and Greek language, ancient philosophy, archaeology, etc.

Legion XXIV has also supplied costuming for local theater and has provided educational programs for churches, schools, colleges and museums.
